  • Paintings in the Toledo Cathedral

The Cathedral is like an art gallery. Many of the chapels display the artwork of well know artists. Some paintings are on the walls, many are on the ceilings. Some are small and others are very large depicting a giant.

The large picture featured at the end of the room is called &#;The Disrobing of Christ&#; (El Expolio)  and is one of fifteen by El Greco.

In addition to the main painting and those around the room, the ceiling is a masterpiece as well. (this is a slide show, wait for the pictures to cycle through, or click the icons to move forward or back)

Other parts of the cathedral have painted ceilings, often used with skylights to illuminate other features in the nave like this. The light from the top right is called El Transparente. (Some say the artistic structure it illuminates is called El Transparente.)

Near the Lion Portal exit is the great painting of St. Christopher.  He was believed to be a giant at seven and a half feet tall. Christopher means &#;bearer of Christ&#;. The painting is 35 feet tall and was painted by Gabriel de Ruedas.  Learn more about the legends of St. Christopher in the links at the end of this post.
